Poster for the SSKKY Open Day

Assignment: Create a visual look for the school open day

Phase 1: 100 sketches

This method of "emptying the head" was suggested by our teacher Johanna Lahtinen. The idea is to make 100 different sketches in order to empty your head of the obvious and boring to get to the diamond ideas. Here are my 72 sketches.

Phase 2: Choose 5 to develop

I did originally choose five, but I immediately disliked one of them. These four are the ones I developed further.

Phase 3: Choose one to realise on Adobe Illustrator

Our target audience is 15-year-old teenagers. In order to make a poster that is attractive to the target audience, I asked my 15-year-old brother and 18-year-old sister for help. They pointed out a few of their favourites from the sketches above. Eventually, I decided to go for the DOTS-design, and here is how the idea developed on Adobe Illustrator:

Phase 4: Create A4 and A3 posters, as well as a Facebook header image and a picture for Instagram

Finally I rooted for a blue colour scheme. I found that the shades of blue calmed down the hectic background. In this work, I was extremely concerned with making a design that would appeal to all genders. Help from my brother and sister was important with regards to this. Furthermore, dialogue with my team members throughout the process was critical in order to keep my eyes open and ideas fresh.

Phase 5: Create a planche containing

  • name and short description of the design
  • Colour palette and information
  • Typography
  • All four designs
